EAR INFECTION

ESSENTIAL OILS

Basil. Fights infections and bacteria; traditionally used for ear infections.

Frankincense. Relieves pain and inflammation associated with an ear infection.

Manuka. Has anti-viral properties and supports immunity, which may target the cause of ear infections.

Tea tree. Effective for ear infections due to its anti- bacterial and anti-viral compounds.

Research
In a 2005 study, researchers examined the middle ear cultures of laboratory animals that were given basil oil and found that basil’s chemical components were highly effective against two types of bacteria that cause middle ear infections.

Home Remedy
Ear Ease. Rub 1 drop each of frankincense oil and basil oil behind your ears and on the soles of your feet to speed up recovery time from ear infections while also reducing pain and swelling. For children, dilute the oil with a carrier oil.

Background
An ear infection is an inflammation of the inner, middle or outer ear caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years are more susceptible to ear infections because of the size and shape of their ear tubes, and because of their immature immune systems. Symptoms may include earaches and thick, yellow fluid coming from the ears. A middle ear infection is generally related to an allergy or upper respiratory infection and is caused by
fluid buildup in the ear. Swimmer’s ear is caused by water getting trapped in the ear canal due to the buildup of wax; this causes bacteria to grow and an infection to occur. Ear infections can either be viral or bacterial, but viral infections are much more common; therefore, treatment with conventional antibiotics typically is ineffective and may include adverse side effects.
