Gingivitis is a common form
of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness and swelling (inflammation) of your gums. There are more than 200,000 reported cases each year. Because gingivitis can be mild, you may not be aware that you have the condition, but it's important to take it seriously and treat it promptly. Gingivitis can lead to much more serious gum disease and eventual tooth loss. Common symptoms of gingivitis are red gums that are swollen and bleed easily. This can be due to poor dental hygiene, smoking, immune-related illnesses, emotional stress, poor nutrition or excess consumption of sugar.
