Lyme disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by deer ticks and black-legged ticks. According to estimates, more than 300,000 Americans are diagnosed with the tick-borne disease each year.150 Because diagnosing Lyme can be difficult, many people who have Lyme disease may be misdiagnosed with other conditions. Thus, many experts believe the true number of cases is much higher. Symptoms can start with flu-like symptoms, including headaches and muscle and joint pain. A “bulls eye” rash may occur at the spot of the bite. It can also cause arthritis that persists months or years after the tick bite. Over time, the symptoms can continue to worsen and turn into a chronic inflammatory condition.
