Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the immune system. It mostly affects the skin and joints, but it also may affect the fingernails, toenails, genitals and inside of the mouth. Approximately 7.5 million people in the U.S. have psoriasis. It occurs in all age groups but is primarily seen in adults. With plaque psoriasis (the most common form), skin cells build up and form scales and itchy, dry patches. The scaly patches, also known as psoriatic plaques, take on a silvery-white appearance. Up to 40 percent of people with psoriasis experience joint inflammation that produces symptoms of arthritis; this is called psoriatic arthritis. Patients with psoriasis have an increased incidence of low self-esteem, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
